San Junipero
(Season 3; Episode 4: Black Mirror)
In this passage, I will analyze the contrast between our two main characters, Yorkie and Kelly. I will also discuss Yorke's introduction to this crowded, noisy area by highlighting their distinct personalities portrayed through different scenes.
Overview:
As the car comes into view during the night in the first couple of seconds, the hairstyles of the characters and the music in the background indicate that this sequence was set in the 1980s. Lots of colorful, vivid lights were used to make the setting seem more "chaotic" or fun: Tucker's Bar (the place where the 2 main characters entered) had hues of blue and a pink-ish purple; inside the bar, more colors were visible, especially a soft tint of green and blue over the screen, making the scene a little diffuse, encoding how people aren't fully aware or conscious since it was displaying a party-like mood with lots of alcohol.
Lighting: Overall - inside the bar - was low-key, and not too bright; created a sense of relaxation and was more laid back.
Yorkie:
The area was depicted as loud and active, and so once Yorkie appeared she looked completely out of place. Despite the very upbeat feel of the town, Yorkie looked rather stiff and confused. Her hands were kept close to her body, as though she was uncomfortable to move. Her eyes were twirling around, not knowing where to focus. This can be decoded that she doesn't go to this place often.
Her choice of outfit was also odd. Yorkie went into a bar with a shirt underneath a sweatshirt, tucked into her pants, almost too disciplined. Her appearance gave the impression of a stereotypical nerd, especially with the glasses.
Yorkie can be understood as someone who prefers to avoid crowds: when she purposely walked towards the arcade area instead of joining the people on the dance floor. She had an almost panic reaction to one of the games where a car crashed into a wall. We can associate this with her havingsome kind of traumatic experience in her past.
Kelly:
The first thing I noticed about her was her choice of outfit and accessories. A bright purple jacket, which can connote luxury or expensiveness, along with lots of jewelry (necklaces, big earrings, all very shiny and noticeable). Her makeup was also bold and colorful, and her hair was tied half up nicely. She was dressed up like a stereotypical popular girl, who takes good care of her appearance.
Contrary to Yorkie, she wasn't stiff, but rather confident in her movements. Her arms swung freely as she walked across the street. When seen sitting next to Yorkie, it was clear that she wasn't afraid to take up space
