MISE-EN-SCENE ANALYSIS ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Initially, I intended to include a large amount of props in the frame to convey as much emotion and information about the character as possible, believing that the more we display, the better the audience will understand. However, I later came to the realization that minimalism may connote a lot more meaning than how it may seem visually. I experienced a traditional tea ceremony while on vacation in Japan and learned quite a few things about their perspectives on enjoying this beverage. In the Japanese "tea drinking" tradition, simplicity is prioritized, which means the scenery is clear of colorful decorations or any complicated elements within. The way everything was organized in the tea room encoded a sense of comfort but within an order, and apparently, only then, we can clear our minds and find the beauty within simple things. I believe this to be an appealing motto to live by, and so the organization of props in the photo did not include too many objects as a reflection of such a mindset. The main props were the drinks placed inside a tray. On the other hand, the painting on the right wall was a little chaotic, an illusion of lines and colors but bordered by the frame.
Lighting plays a significant role in providing the mood and tones of the character’s personality. For example, if the brightness was lower with dimmer lighting, it may represent sadness or loneliness, and possibly tension. As it was the opposite of my intentions, I purposely used a more high-key setting of light with two different sources: natural light from the window in the upper left corner; and the yellow light bulb from above. The natural light was used to create more contrast, enhancing depth and dimension. The yellow hue from the bulb adds extra warmth and radiance, connoting aliveness and uplifting, which mostly contributes to the personality of the character.
As humans, we were designed to detect light as it signals happiness, hope, and comfort. This takes me to the idea that this character is someone who attracts others with their optimistic lifestyle. Someone who likes to laugh and enjoy the passage of time. A great listener who is reliable and sincere with their thoughts and emotions.
I purposely shot at an angle quite close, not too wide, more narrow and closed which creates a sense of suffocation and uncomfortability. This makes it easier to realize the simple choice of props and where they are. However, the main reason for this angle is to encode the character's self-discipline and how they have established boundaries. Despite being very open and non-judgemental towards others, we can deduce from the camera angle that the character is critical of himself or herself. The chaotic artwork connotes the suppressed emotions of the character. As people, we all experience anger, guilt, disappointment, and other negative feelings. Some may want to express them all, as violently as they can, while others choose to restrict some of that intensity and display them differently, maybe more softly. My character belongs to the latter. However, as we all do, this character has her/his limits (represented by the frames), which further sustenance the self-discipline ideology.
I purposely used matcha latte for the drinks, not only because of my personal favoritism for the beverage but also due to the color. Firstly, green is associated with nature and growth, hinting at the character's determination to improve themselves every day and to be his/her best version. Moreover, green means tranquility and relaxation and evokes the feeling of calmness and soothing which is the vibe that the character expresses.
