TOP 20 FILMS IN 2021
As can be seen, none of the top 20 films in 2021 (as concluded by the BFI) follows the romance genre - most are actions and thrillers. Just from looking at the movies that made it to the top of the list it is clear that peole within the selected regions for the research enjoys more fast-pace, intense sequences with physical stunts and high-stake conflicts.
Regarding the distributors, it was not suprising to see this category being dominated by those conglomerates known as the "Big 5": Walt Disney, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros (none from Paramount made it into the rankings). Some animated texts included: Spirit Untamed; Tom & Jerry: The movie (combination of live action and animation); Ron's Gone Wrong - this indicates that children is a larger and more influential group of audience within the film industry that people may expect.
RELEASES AND BOX OFFICE BY GENRE
As I anticipated, Action, despite having less number of releases to comedy, gained the highest figure for box office gross (£296,7 million - around 4 times the figure of Comedy). Animation stood at the third highest had 38 releases with a top performing title of "The Addams Family 2", while Horror with a lower amount of movies of 24 had the highlighted title of "A Quiet Place Part II".
The industry produced significantly less romance in the same year (only 13 releases) with the top performing title of "The Last Letter From Your Lover"- Box ofice gross of £1,5 million.
POPULARITY OF ON-DEMAND STREAMING SERVICES
Regarding those sites that are advertising-supported, BBC proved to be the most popular at approximately 62%, followed by ITV Hub which had nearly half of the UK household using. Youtube and ALL4 was reported to be equally well-known with the similar percentage of 41%. My5 and UK TV Play were the two lowest figures, with 25% for the prior and around 8% for the latter.
